Welcome to the WDE Media website.
As my first article on this platform, I want to share a personal story of how this new adventure started. One year ago, I embarked on a journey to deeply understand Artificial Intelligence (AI). I didn’t know exactly where it might take me, but having been an eyewitness to multiple overlapping technology waves over a 50+ year career, I knew it would be a wild ride.
A Journey Through Technology Waves
At my high school graduation in 1969, the world was in transition. My advanced math classes still used slide rules, and IBM had only just announced the world’s first transistor-based mainframe computing. A year later, consumer electronics exploded, and by 1973, I started a sales job selling programmable desktop calculators to farmers and feed mills. Because a formal software industry wouldn’t exist for another decade, I became a self-taught programmer by night, writing custom solutions for businesses making the leap from paper and pencil to automation.
Over the decades, I navigated the evolution from those early calculators to minicomputers, UNIX operating systems, the rise of the Internet at Sun Microsystems, and the rollout of 3G and 4G cellular networks. In every wave, I learned that while the tools change, the core disruption remains the same: automation doesn’t just eliminate jobs; it creates new ones and expands our capacity to do more.
The Turning Point: AI and a Personal Mission
When the AI wave hit, the initial landscape was filled with fear, uncertainty, and doubt. But after extensive testing of cloud AI services, I found immense value in Google Gemini’s Deep Research capabilities. This allowed me to synthesize hundreds of sources into a massive, portable knowledge base, shifting my development focus to Google Antigravity and multi-agent orchestration.
Then, the technology became deeply personal. While waiting for an appointment, I wondered: *Could I use AI to create tools for my nephew, Christopher, to help him navigate his college courses and prepare for an independent career?*
Christopher uses a wheelchair and faces limited mobility and speech. I prompted an AI research project with his specific needs: low-power, edge-native processing that could run on a battery all day, real-time AI speech-to-text for transcribing lectures, and integration with home automation. The resulting blueprint, a “Wheelchair-Mounted AI-Server”, was the spark that redefined my focus. After 50 years of building systems for scale, I was finally building something close to home.
The Vision: Born Accessible Technology
Historically, Assistive Technology has been siloed, expensive, and stigmatizing. It often singled out users rather than bridging the gap. Today, the landscape is shifting toward ambient computing, where assistive features are woven directly into the fabric of daily digital life. This is the convergence of Educational Technology, Artificial Intelligence, and Assistive Technology.
Our goal at WDE Media is to ride this wave by delivering market research, structural blueprints, and comparative analyses to guide institutions through this transformation. We are building a software tech stack, powered by Google Gemma 4 models and edge-native local processing like the Nvidia Jetson Orin Nano, to ensure real-time responsiveness without the latency of distant servers.
“We are building products at the intersection of Assistive Technology, Educational Tech, and Artificial Intelligence that are ‘born compliant’ and support worldwide accessibility standards.”
This commitment goes down to the microscopic level. For instance, our applications utilize the Atkinson Hyperlegible font, a typeface explicitly designed to prioritize legibility for readers with low vision, paired with an accessibility-first color palette featuring Indigo Blue, Off-White, and Metallic Gold. This isn’t just about picking a font that looks good; it’s about creating dignity in the reading experience. The mission of independence, accessibility, and dignity is literally embedded in the source code.
